I’d like the Island to be a ‘lively’ one if possible. Im 25 and going with a friend for a girly holiday but hoping for a touch of culture (hence Athens).
Evia island is where you want to go. You fly into athens and its only an hour transfer by bus as the island is connected by a bridge. The island itself is not to really commercialised much and has some good bars and restraunts. Closest island to Athens.
With a minimum 2- 4 hours trip from any island in the Cyclades will leave very limited time to do anything of importance in Athens for a day.
Even from the port to get to the center will take minimum half to 1 hour further more traveling.
There is also a further problem since not all boats depart from the islands early in the morning in order to have all the time ahead of you to spend it in Athens.
You have to reconsider the time you want to spend for your excursion.
You should probably pick one of the major Cycaldic islands ie. Mykonos or Paros, and take the hydrofoil for a day trip to Athens.http://z.about.com/d/goeurope/1/0/y/t/1/…
mykonos and paros are too far for a day trip. it will take u at least 3 hours to get there and another 3 to return. there are a few islands right across from athens that are a half hour by speed ferry. check out poros and aigina. look for tickets at bluestar ferry
You should go to Poros, Spetses, Egina, Hydra all near Athens, and if you have time, you can go to Santorini, Milos, Folegandros etc
Good luck and trip my friend.

6There is so much to see and do in Athens, that one day is not enough. By the time you get there……half the day will be over!
